She was the most powerful mistress in the kingdom, but they used public humiliation to break her mind before she ever reached the scaffold. Jane Shore was the brilliant, beautiful mistress of King Edward IV. When the King suddenly died, his brother, the ruthless Richard III, seized the throne and decided to completely erase Jane’s political influence. Instead of a standard execution, Richard engineered a deeply sadistic psychological punishment: a public penance designed to completely strip her of her human dignity. On a freezing Sunday morning, she was forced to walk entirely barefoot through the sharp cobblestone streets of London wearing nothing but a thin, translucent white kirtle, holding a wax taper. The crowd was ordered to spit on her and mock her as her feet bled onto the stones. The psychological trauma was so profound that she survived the walk but spent the rest of her long life as a penniless, broken shadow, begging for scraps in the very city where she once ruled the heart of a King.

Interesting Fact Jane Shore was so remarkably charismatic that despite her total public humiliation and ruin, the King’s own Solicitor General, Thomas Lynom, fell desperately in love with her while she was imprisoned. He actually petitioned the tyrant Richard III for permission to marry the ruined, penniless woman, proving her intellect could captivate men even in her darkest hours.
