The Body Snatchers of Nova Scotia Gardens

John Bishop had been selling bodies to London’s anatomy schools for over a decade. By his own confession, he had stolen between 500 and 1,000 corpses from graveyards across the city. He knew the market, the prices, the buyers. He knew that fresh specimens paid better than old ones.

In the autumn of 1831, he stopped digging.

The Horror

Bishop, Thomas Williams, and James May began luring victims — street children, isolated labourers, travellers with nowhere else to go — to their squalid lodgings at Nova Scotia Gardens in Bethnal Green with the promise of shelter and food. Once inside, the victims were given drinks heavily dosed with alcohol and laudanum. When they were unconscious, they were carried out to the garden and drowned head‑first in the well. The method left no bruises, no broken bones, no obvious signs of violence. The bodies arrived at the anatomy schools looking as though their owners had simply died in their sleep.

On 5th November 1831, Bishop and May delivered a body to the anatomy rooms at King’s College — tipping a fourteen‑year‑old Italian street boy, later remembered as Carlo Ferrari, out of a hamper and asking twelve guineas for him. The demonstrator of anatomy, Richard Partridge, noticed that the body was still warm and that the teeth had been freshly extracted. He told Bishop and May he needed to find change to pay them. He was sending for the police.

Bishop and Williams were convicted of murder and hanged at Newgate on 5th December 1831 before a crowd of tens of thousands. In passing sentence, the judge ordered their bodies to be given over for anatomical dissection — the exact fate they had sold to others.

Their crimes helped to force Parliament to pass the Anatomy Act of 1832 — legally supplying anatomy schools with the bodies of unclaimed paupers and other institutional dead, and destroying the black market that had created Bishop and Williams in the first place. They murdered Carlo Ferrari. Parliament’s response was designed to make sure no one ever needed to again.

The Modern Relic

Nova Scotia Gardens no longer exists as an address; the ground it stood on was swallowed by later development in Bethnal Green. King’s College London still operates near the Strand — the same institution whose anatomy demonstrator kept his composure long enough to send for help while two murderers waited in the hall for their payment.
